Trend Report: Leopard Print

Patterns and prints are always a great way to liven up the fall/winter months and this season, the print to be seen in is none other than leopard. Leopard print has always been popular but after the Fall 2009 runways were inundated with the print, we’ve seen a surge of fashionistas rocking the look. Although it might seem like a trend that can only be worn by the more confident girls among us, we assure you it is not.

Celebrities like Kate Moss have been rocking the leopard print for as long as we can remember. Although it is no surprise that Kate was clued in to the merits of the style at an early stage, the trend started long before her time.

In fact, throughout history, kings and queens have used animal prints as a sign of their wealth and status. Further along the timeline, in the 1960s, Yves Saint Laurent released a collection of animal print coats and blouses, cementing the leopard look as a timeless trend. Fast forward to 2009 and the leopard print is seen on the runway in a variety of forms, from jackets at Blumarine to dresses at Diane Von Furstenberg to jumpsuits at Miss Sixty.

For us, the leopard print trend is perfect for its versatility – the style can be worn in so many ways. For those that prefer to go unnoticed, a leopard print belt adds flair to an outfit without drawing attention to it. For those more passionate about the trend, a knee-length leopard coat will always be the talking point of your outfit. As all our stylish celeb muses have shown, the look is ready to be made your own.

Whether you take cues from the fashion-forward style of Kate Moss or you prefer the classically trained eye of Olivia Palermo, we’re covering all bases. November’s Trend Report is hereby dedicated to those wild-at-heart girls who fully embrace the power of the leopard print.

Trend Report: Leopard Print

Just a few days ago, Alexa Chung (far left) headed off to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards in a cherry red mini dress, paired with a faux fur, leopard print coat and black ballet flats, completing her outfit by slinging a quilted Chanel bag over her shoulder. Alexa wore Topshop’s (0) to the event. If Topshop don’t have your size, try Lucky Brand’s (9) for a similar look. Add Mini Market’s () and All Black’s (.95) to complete the look.

Olivia (second from left) has chosen to keep her look straightforward and classic, opting for a quick hint of leopard by pairing a printed belt with a slinky black dress. Grab BCBGMaxAzria’s (8) and add Another Line’s (). Nordstrom’s () will add a touch of color to your outfit while Forever21’s (.80) completes the outfit at a budget-friendly price.

As always, Kim Kardashian (middle) accentuates her perfect curves by choosing a velvet dress that hugs her body in all the right places. The red leopard print, while obvious, isn’t over-the-top, leaving room for the strong one-shouldered cut. Both Rachel Rachel Roy’s () and Diane Von Furstenberg’s (8) are perfect alternatives. Finish off the look with Free People’s April Platform Wedged Heel (8).

If there’s one thing we love about Dita Von Teese (second from right) it’s her flawless, down to the last detail style. Even when she’s dropping off dry cleaning. Here she has given us a double dose of leopard print with a boxy bag and scarf combo. Tolani’s () and Sienna Ricchi’s Milan Belted Shopper (.30) are the perfect accessories if you love Dita’s look.

Our final dose of inspiration comes from the biggest proponent of leopard print we know, Kate Moss (far right). As always, Kate emulates a rocker chic vibe by pairing her hooded coat with bohemian chic earrings, a black mini and pointed pumps. This (0) by Pencey is a chic substitute, especially when worn with Forever21’s (.80).
