How to Create a wikiHow User Information Box (UIB)

UIBsare User Information Boxes that display important information. They are mostly used on and Project pages. Here's how to create a UIB using a generic example.

Steps

  1. Create an idea and search for duplicates. You can search through already-made userboxes here.
  2. Name the user info box template according to the Title Policy. For example, you might type in "Template: User Pudding" for a user info box about pudding. Click "Submit" and "Next" to create the template page.
    • Abbreviations are highly discouraged, because they are difficult to interpret.
    • Use "Template:User" as the beginning of your title along with an additional word or two to describe the intent of what your UIB will intend to get the user to display.(Example: Template:User Chocolate)
    • Name Language UIBs with a two-letter abbreviation and a zero-to-five scale of expertise, with five being the most advanced level.(Example: Template:User German 5)
    • Do not add a space in between the "Template:" namespace portion of the title and the word "User" (which denotes this page as a UIB).
  3. Create the template page.Although it was fine to click "Write an Article" for articles, UIBs are a little trickier, once you are sure there are no duplicates for your idea.
    • Visit your address bar at the top of your web browser, and type in the address for wikiHow ()
    • Type the word "Template:" and then the name of your UIB with the name you came up with earlier and press enter.
  4. Open up this page in Edit mode.It should open up in the advanced editor. If it doesn't open in advanced editor, something has been done incorrectly.Click the Edit button at the top of the page to open up editing mode.
  5. Copy the code below.Paste it into the edit field for you new page. You will want to be in advanced editing to create your user info box; click "edit wikitext" in the upper right hand corner if you are in the guided editor script. {{Userbox |border-c = Border color |border-s = Border size (Use 1 to match others) |id-c = ID field background color |id-s = ID field font size (Use 14 to match others) |id-fc = ID field color |info-c = Info text background color |info-s = Info font size (Use 8 to match others) |info-fc = Info text color |id = ID field text (40px image or two letters) |info = Info field Text (Description or large section) }}<noinclude> {{br|4}} =Do Not Edit: Global Template= </noinclude>
  6. Decide if you'd like your UIB to use words that the User inputs into their template.Although a small amount of UIBs have this feature triggered such as this and Template:User Dream Car. If you'd like, use template-like pieces to get the items to form correctly if and when the user uses this piece. Number your input pieces using 1-2-3, along with three squiggly brackets along either side of the pieces to input (such as {{{1}}},{{{2}}} and {{{3}}}).
  7. Review the Standards page for UserInfoboxes for their required parameters. To ensure that UIBs are uniform throughout, maintain the original width and do not let the box be any more than 50 pixels in height (a 40px image accomplishes this). Have either a picture or two letters in the smaller of the two boxes, and use size 7 or 8 font in the description.
  8. Use a hex-code or color name where applicable. The color codes for text and background colors are all in Hexadecimal format. For example, white would be #ffffff and black is #000000. You can find a chart or generator for these color codes .
  9. Preview to make sure your user info box is just right, and then click "Save" to finalize and create your UIB.
  10. Find the correct for your new user info box in UserInfoBoxes and add that information between the two <noinclude> and </noinclude> tags.

  • Question
Where do I put the color code and what should the UIB to say?
    Community Answer
You put the color codes in all the spaces where it says "c" (e.g. border-c, id-c, etc.). You put the text of what the UIB will say where it says "info." If you are unsure, you can look at the text used to create other UIBs and it may make more sense.
    Thanks!
  • Question
    How does step three work?
    Top Answerer
Type "https://www.wikihow.com/" and "Template:" into the search bar followed by your UIB name. When the page comes up, press 'edit' at the top of the page and start creating your UIB!
    Thanks!

    • Change font color to make it readable.
    • If you must include more than two letters, within the ID Field, try a font size of 10.
    • With the new design, most images will be 30px and tall images will be 25px.
