5 DIY Hair Masks For Hair That Just Won't Cooperate

Thanks to its special makeup of fatty acids (particularly lauric acid), this tropical oil penetrates the hair shaft, according to a study in theJournal of Cosmetic Science. There, it helps seal ends and smooth the cuticle. Smoother strands reflect light better than rough ones, hence the shine boosting effect, says Jennifer Matos, stylist at the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City.
Ingredients:3-5 Tbsp coconut oil
Directions:Massage into hair, starting at your ends. Leave in for 30 minutes; wash out with shampoo.
Best for:super dry hair
With cream, oil, and butter, this mask packs a triple hit of moisture to dry hair fibers. Plus, grapefruit antioxidants work as a natural antimicrobial to protect against the fungus that can cause scalp flaking, says Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, a trichologist at Philip Kingsley in New York City. Ingredients:2 eggs, 2 oz heavy cream, 1 oz olive oil, 1 oz melted butter, juice of half a grapefruit
Directions:Mix all ingredients together. Apply to the whole length of your hair and massage into scalp for 5 to 10 minutes. Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes or overnight, then wash out with shampoo and condition as usual.
Best for:sun- and heat-damaged hair
UV rays and heat can scorch strands and cause brittleness and breakage (especially if your hair is already stressed from coloring). This mask, from Matos, is ideal to apply after a day spent outside. The monounsaturated fatty acids in avocado and olive oil penetrate the hair shaft to soften from within, suggests research in theInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, while honey conditions and coats hair to improve shine.
Ingredients:1 ripe avocado, 1-2 Tbsp honey, 3-5 Tbsp olive oil
Directions:Mash avocado and stir in honey and olive oil. Apply from roots to ends. Leave on for 30 to 60 minutes. Rinse well.
Best for:limp hair that needs a lift
Hair that falls flat can get some oomph with beer. Yeast and hops in the brew help swell the hair cuticle, making each strand thicker. The hoppier, the better, so opt for IPAs, says Matos.
Ingredients:Half of a bottle of beer. (If you have longer hair, use a full bottle.)
Directions:Open the beer and let it sit for half an hour so the carbonation settles. Shampoo hair and rinse. Then apply beer. Rinse after 15 to 20 minutes or style without rinsing.
Best for:oily hair
Greasy strands lay limp, so sop up extra oil with a leave-on rinse featuring mouthwash and chamomile tea, suggests Cunnane Phillips. Both ingredients are mildly astringent to soak up excess sebum (oil) and stimulate blood flow to the scalp to promote scalp and hair health.
Ingredients:Mouthwash (any kind will do) and chamomile tea
Directions:Brew chamomile tea and let cool. Combine equal amounts mouthwash and chamomile tea and shake well. After shampooing and conditioning, towel dry hair. Sprinkle the mixture all over your scalp. Rub in lightly with your fingertips and leave on.
